Planting and care

Set the Kentucky wisteria in a sunny spot, on rich, well-drained soil. Provide a sturdy support (arbour, pergola or framework) able to bear its weight at maturity. At planting, amend the soil with compost or black earth and water thoroughly to help the roots establish.

Keep the soil moderately moist during the first growing season. Once established, the plant is fairly drought tolerant. Do a light pruning after the main bloom (June) to encourage a second summer bloom. Cut back vigorous shoots in late winter to control the shape and ensure good airflow.
