Planting and care

Plant in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5), rich in organic matter and well drained. Space plants 1.2 to 1.5 m apart. Add peat or compost at planting to keep the soil acidic. Spread a mulch of sawdust or leaves after planting.

During the first year, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly in dry weather. From the second year on, the plant is more drought tolerant. Prune lightly after harvest to encourage branching and remove dead wood. No chemical treatment is needed under normal conditions.
