Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in an open spot, in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. The elm likes slightly moist soils but tolerates some drought once established. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and amend with compost.

Water regularly during the first year to encourage rooting. After that, natural rainfall is generally enough. No pruning is required; if needed, do any work during winter dormancy. Watch for Dutch elm disease, although this cultivar offers good resistance.
