Planting and care

Plant the American elm in fall or spring in a spot in full sun, ideally in rich, well-drained soil. Make sure the soil is well firmed and water thoroughly at planting time.

During the first year, keep up regular watering during long droughts. Once established, this tolerant tree needs little care. Avoid wounding the trunk and watch for Dutch elm disease, although this cultivar shows better resistance than wild forms.
