Planting and care

Plant the basswood in fall or spring in deep, rich, well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, work in compost well and leave the root collar at soil level. Water generously at planting.

Keep up regular watering during the first year of growth, especially in dry spells. After that, the tree tolerates changes in moisture well. Little care is needed; prune lightly in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches. Mulch the base for the first two years to keep it moist.
