Planting and care

Plant white thyme in well-drained soil, ideally sandy or poor, in full sun. Dig a shallow hole, set the root ball at soil level and backfill with a mix of soil and gravel. No organic matter is needed, which improves drainage.

White thyme handles drought very well once established. Water moderately after planting (a week or two), then gradually cut back. In ordinary garden growing, no extra watering is generally needed except during long droughts. A light trim after flowering helps keep a compact shape.
