Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. The 'Nigra' cedar tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, add compost or peat, then backfill and firm well. Water generously at planting.

During the first growing season, keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Once established, the 'Nigra' cedar is very tolerant and needs little watering, except during long droughts. A light trim in spring to keep the shape and remove dead branches is recommended; it responds well to more formal hedge shearing.
