Planting and care

Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, in a sunny spot. Spacing should be at least 1.5 to 2 m for the best development. Water regularly the first year to establish the root system; after that, this shrub tolerates moderate drought well once established. A light mulch helps keep moisture in the soil and moderate temperature swings.

Prune after flowering, removing dead wood and lightly shortening the stems to keep a compact silhouette. This shrub needs very little care afterwards; it doesn't need yearly fertilizing if the soil is reasonably rich. After harsh winters, a late frost can damage the new leaves, but the plant recovers quickly.
