A very tall tree with full, bluish foliage, for rooms with high ceilings. At this size, it's the first thing you notice when you walk into the room.

It stays full right down to the bottom, while tall trees are often bare at the base. Its branches are strong and hold a lot of decorations. Plan on having enough: a 9-foot tree needs many more than you'd think.

Its blue-green colour stands out with warm white (yellowish) lights and gold or copper ornaments. With cool white lights, you notice it less.

Size and space needed

• Height: 8 to 9 feet (2.4 to 2.7 m)
• Width at the base: about 6 feet (1.8 m). Leave some space around it.
• Ceiling: at least 10 feet. Measure before you order, adding the height of the stand and the tree topper.
• It needs a sturdy stand with a large water reservoir: it's a heavy tree and must be held firmly.
• It takes two people to carry it. Check that it will fit through your doors and up the stairs.

Keeping it fresh

• Cut 2 cm off the bottom of the trunk just before setting it up. After a few hours in the air, sap plugs the cut, and the tree can no longer drink, even if it has water.
• Set it in a sturdy stand with a large reservoir. The bottom of the trunk must always sit in water. On the first day, it can drink 6 litres or more. Check the water morning and evening: a large reservoir empties faster than you'd think.
• Add nothing to the water: no sugar, no aspirin, no bleach. Plain water is enough.
• Keep it away from heating vents, the fireplace and sunny windows. Dry heat is what makes needles fall, not the cold.
• Leave it in the garage for a few hours before bringing it in, so it goes from cold to warm gradually.

After the holidays

Most municipalities pick up natural Christmas trees in January. First remove all decorations, including metal hooks.
