Planting and care

Plant pussy willow in fall or spring in a sunny spot near a source of moisture. It prefers moist to very moist soils and does poorly in long droughts. Allow open space, as this shrub quickly reaches a good spread.

Water regularly the first year of planting to make sure the roots establish. This shrub needs practically no care once settled. A light pruning after flowering keeps a compact shape and encourages new blooms the following year.
