Planting and care

Plant the 'Red Lake' currant in fall or spring in a sunny spot, sheltered from strong winds. Choose well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, enriched with organic matter. Space plants 1 to 1.2 m apart. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and set the plant at the same level as in its container.

Water regularly the first season to keep the soil moist without waterlogging. In the following years, moderate watering is enough, except during droughts. Prune lightly after harvest or in late winter to open up the centre and remove dead branches. Fertilize every spring with a balanced fertilizer.
