Planting and care

Plant staghorn sumac in well-drained soil, ideally in full sun for the best fall colour. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, even poor or compacted. Space plants 2 to 3 m apart. Choose a somewhat out-of-the-way spot, since this shrub tends to sucker.

At planting time, water generously to ensure good soil contact with the roots. Once established, staghorn sumac is very drought tolerant and needs little watering. No regular pruning is needed; simply remove unwanted suckers and dead branches in late winter.
