Planting and care

Plant the 'Hino White' azalea in spring or fall in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5), rich in organic matter and very well drained. Choose a part-shade spot, protected from dry winds and scorching direct sun. Amend the soil with peat or an acidic azalea mix. Leave enough planting space for air circulation.

Water regularly during the first year to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Use water that isn't hard (lime-free). Mulch the base with 5 to 8 cm of acidic organic matter (pine bark, peat) to hold in moisture. After flowering, remove spent flowers without damaging the buds. Avoid chemical fertilizers; prefer a specialized azalea fertilizer applied in spring.
