Planting and care

Plant the 'Hino Crimson' azalea in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5), rich in organic matter and very well drained. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball, add peat or acidic growing mix, and set the shrub in place without sinking it. Mulch the base with 5 cm of wood chips to keep the soil moist and cool. Set in part shade, sheltered from drying winds.

Water regularly and thoroughly, especially during the first year of establishment and while it is in bloom. The soil should stay consistently moist but never saturated. Mist the foliage in dry weather to keep the air humid. After flowering, carefully remove spent flowers without damaging the buds at their base. Avoid lime-based fertilizers; use a fertilizer for acid-loving plants in spring if needed.
