Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in a sunny spot, in deep, well-drained soil. The red oak tolerates various soil types but prefers slightly acidic ground. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and amend the soil with organic matter. Firm without over-compacting.

Water regularly the first year after planting to establish a strong root system. Once established, the red oak is very drought tolerant and only needs extra watering during extreme drought. No pruning is required; only remove dead or diseased branches. This tree needs little care and thrives in urban settings.
