Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in an open spot in full sun. The oak prefers deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and loosen the bottom. Set the tree in place without sinking the root collar, then backfill with a mix of soil and organic matter.

Water regularly during the first year of establishment, especially in dry spells. Once well rooted, the oak will cope better with water stress. Avoid unnecessary pruning; only remove dead or badly placed branches. Mulch at the base helps retain moisture and break down fallen leaves.
