Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in an open spot in full sun. The bur oak prefers well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and loosen the soil deeply to encourage rooting. Water generously at planting and keep the soil moist (not waterlogged) during the first year of establishment, especially during summer drought.

Once established, this tolerant tree needs little care. Limit watering after the second year, except during long droughts. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer. Prune lightly in winter to keep a sound structure; this tree naturally develops a majestic habit.
