Planting and care

Plant the Austrian pine in fall or spring in a sunny spot. It establishes best in well-drained soil and tolerates poor, limy or rocky soils. Make sure it anchors well by avoiding areas exposed to strong winds, which destabilize it at planting.

During the first year, keep the soil moderately moist during long dry spells. Once established, the Austrian pine becomes very drought tolerant and undemanding. No pruning is needed under normal conditions; a pyramidal structure develops naturally.
