Planting and care

Plant Phlox paniculata 'Party Girl' in full sun or light part shade, in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Adding compost at planting helps it establish. Space plants 45 to 60 cm apart. Water regularly after planting to keep the soil moist without waterlogging during the first two seasons. Once well rooted, this phlox copes better with dry spells, but moderate watering in summer extends the bloom.

For yearly care, remove spent flowers to encourage a second bloom and a more compact habit. A light mulch helps hold in soil moisture. Divide the clumps every three to four years in spring to revitalize the plant and keep the centre from getting crowded. Open up the base and remove diseased lower leaves to prevent powdery mildew.
