Planting and care

Set in full sun (at least 6 hours) in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Spacing between plants should be at least 45 cm to ensure good air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Amend the soil with well-rotted compost.

Water regularly during the first season to build a strong root system. Once established, garden phlox tolerates dry spells well but flowers better in consistently cool soil. Pinch the young stems in early summer to encourage compact branching and more abundant flowering. Remove spent flowers regularly to extend the flowering period.
