Planting and care

Set switchgrass in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. It also accepts poor and compacted soils. Plant in spring or early fall, spacing plants 60 to 90 cm apart. No particular fertilizer is needed.

Water moderately at planting to encourage rooting. Once established, this perennial is very drought tolerant and needs little care. Cut back to the ground in late winter (February–March), before growth resumes. No need to divide or fertilize regularly; this plant thrives in lean conditions.
