Planting and care

Set 'Cheyenne Sky' switchgrass in place in spring in well-drained soil, in full sun. Drought tolerant once established, this cultivar thrives in poor ground and doesn't mind compaction. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart. Little watering is needed after the first season. Cut the clump back to 10 cm above the ground in late winter or early spring, before growth resumes.

Switchgrass needs little care. No regular pruning or fertilizing is required. In cold regions, leave the dry structure in place all winter to protect the heart of the plant and enjoy the ornamental effect. Divide the clumps every 4 to 5 years if desired to regenerate the plant.
