Planting and care

Plant the black gum in fall or spring in well-drained to moist soil rich in organic matter. Choose a spot in full sun and allow enough space, as this tree reaches a large spread. Avoid soils that are too limy or dry.

It particularly likes wet ground, even ground that floods temporarily. Water regularly the first year to build a deep root system. No maintenance pruning is needed under ideal conditions; keep interventions to a strict minimum, as the black gum heals slowly.
