Planting and care

Plant in light to moderately rich, well-drained soil, in a sunny spot. This grass prefers rather poor to average soil; avoid overly generous amendments. Space 50 to 60 cm apart in a bed. Generous watering at planting allows it to take well over 3 to 4 weeks. After that, this moor grass is content with natural rainfall; it tolerates drought well once established.

Care is minimal: leave the foliage and plumes in place all winter to enjoy their graphic look. Cut back to 10 cm above the ground in late winter or early spring, before growth resumes. No treatment or summer pruning is needed. In soil that is too wet or too rich, the clump flops; respecting its soil preferences guarantees a compact, upright silhouette.
