Planting and care

Plant in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, in full sun or part shade. Lemon balm prefers a warm, sheltered spot. The recommended spacing is 45 to 60 cm between plants. Water regularly after planting to make sure it takes well during the first few weeks.

Keep the soil moderately moist during the growing season, without excess water that could lead to root rot. A light mulch helps hold in moisture and moderates temperature. Cut back lightly after flowering to encourage dense growth and prevent legginess. Lemon balm self-seeds readily; remove spent flowers to keep its spread in check if desired.
