Planting and care

Plant the black walnut in fall or spring in a sunny spot, in rich, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and enrich the soil with mature compost. Firm the soil well and form a watering basin around the plant.

Water generously after planting to make sure it takes well. During the first year, keep the soil moist but without standing water. Once established, the black walnut tolerates drought well. No pruning is needed, except to remove dead or badly placed branches.
