Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in moist to moderately drained soil enriched with organic matter. Winterberry prefers a sunny to partly shaded spot and appreciates protection from strong winds. Plan a male pollinator plant nearby (same cultivar or another male Ilex verticillata) for the best fruiting.

Water regularly during the first year of establishment to keep the soil cool without standing water. After that, the shrub tolerates soil moisture well and needs little watering except during long droughts. A light pruning after flowering keeps a compact shape; avoid pruning too late so as not to compromise the following fall's fruit.
