Planting and care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. At planting, enrich the soil with compost and water generously. Space plants at least 1.2 m apart. This shrub prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, well worked at planting time.

Water regularly for the first two years after planting to make sure it roots well. Once established, the panicle hydrangea tolerates dry spells well, although regular watering promotes more abundant flowering. Prune lightly in spring to keep a compact silhouette. Spread organic mulch at the base to hold in moisture and regulate soil temperature.
