Planting and care

Plant in rich, well-drained soil, in part shade to partial shade. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart so the clump can develop fully. Amend the soil with compost at planting and plan a mulch to hold in moisture and protect the crown in winter.

Water regularly while it establishes, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Once established, the plant tolerates short dry spells well thanks to its root system. A balanced fertilizer in spring promotes better growth and leaf quality. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage foliage development.
