Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Sea buckthorn tolerates poor, sandy and even slightly salty soils. Space plants 1.5 to 2 m apart. Adding organic matter at planting helps it establish, but isn't essential.

Water moderately during the first year after planting. Once established, sea buckthorn is very drought resistant and needs little care. No regular pruning is required; step in only to remove dead wood or limit its spread. Female plants produce fruit without pruning.
