Planting and care

Plant in a sheltered spot, out of the prevailing winds. Amend the soil well with compost or well-rotted manure. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, set the plant at ground level and firm gently. Water thoroughly at planting.

For the first two years, keep the soil evenly moist without excess water. Once established, rose of Sharon tolerates drought well. Prune lightly in late winter to keep a compact shape and stimulate flowering. A light mulch protects the roots in years of extreme weather.
