Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. The beech likes full sun to keep the purple colour of its foliage. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and enrich the excavated soil with organic matter. Set the tree at the same level as in the nursery.

Water regularly during the first growing season to make sure it takes well. Once established, the beech handles normal conditions well. Avoid ground that is waterlogged in winter. No pruning is needed for natural growth; prune lightly after the leaves come out if desired. Mulch the base to hold in moisture and regulate soil temperature.
