Planting and care

Plant in part shade in a spot sheltered from strong winds and scorching afternoon sun. The soil should be well drained, slightly acidic and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Set the plant in place without sinking the root collar.

Water generously at planting and during the first two years. Keep the soil cool and moist but not soggy. Mulch the base to hold in moisture and protect the roots from the cold. No pruning is needed; let the natural form develop. During prolonged drought, water deeply.
