Long valued in traditional herbalism, echinacea is used above all to support the body's natural defences and well-being during cold season. Its flowers and leaves are harvested and dried for tea; the roots are traditionally prepared as a decoction.

As a tea: At the first signs of a cold, to boost the immune defences.

Harvesting and drying

Harvest while the plant is in bloom, in dry weather, late in the morning: the dew has evaporated and the aromatic compounds are at their peak. Cut healthy flowers and leaves, leaving two thirds of the plant in place so it grows back.

Spread the harvest in a single layer on a rack or a clean cloth, in a dry, airy place away from light. Light fades the colour and carries off the aromas; so does too much heat. Do not go above 35 °C.

Allow 5 to 10 days. It is ready when a stem snaps cleanly instead of bending. Then store in an airtight, opaque jar, away from light, for up to a year.

Planting and care

Plant purple coneflower in well-drained soil, in full sun, spacing plants 45 cm apart. Planting is done in spring or fall. Set the root ball with the crown at soil level, without overloading with rich growing mix, which would favour foliage at the expense of flowering.

Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting to make sure it roots, then cut back: once settled, coneflower tolerates drought well. Cut the stems back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years to rejuvenate the plants and limit the decline in flowering.
