Planting and care

Plant in rich, well-structured soil enriched with compost or organic matter, in a shady or part-shade spot. The male fern tolerates cool soils well but doesn't need a flooded spot. Allow 60 cm between plants so the fronds can develop.

Water regularly for the first two seasons so the soil stays cool without excess water. Once established, the fern is very self-sufficient. A mulch of dead leaves or compost in the fall protects the rhizomes from the cold and keeps the soil moist. No pruning is needed; simply remove dead fronds in spring.
