Planting and care

Plant the smoke bush in light, well-drained soil, in full sun to bring out the dark colour of the foliage. Avoid ground that is too wet or clay-heavy, which encourages fungal diseases. Since the shrub tolerates lime well, there's no need to amend routinely.

For the first two years, keep the soil moderately moist at planting and during long dry spells. Once established, this shrub shows great drought resistance and needs little watering. Avoid too much nitrogen fertilizer, which would dull the colour of the foliage. A light pruning after flowering is enough to keep its shape; no regular treatment is needed.
