Planting and care

Plant in acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, in part shade or out of strong afternoon sun. The shrub likes to be planted in a moist spot, ideally near an area that holds water without creating long-standing puddles. Mulch generously after planting to hold in moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Water regularly during the first growing season, especially in dry spells, as Clethra dislikes drought. Once established, gradually reduce how often you water while keeping the soil consistently cool. No formal pruning is needed; simply remove dead wood or badly placed branches in spring. Apply a fertilizer for acid-loving plants in spring if the soil lacks nutrients.
