Planting and care

Set in rich, well-drained, slightly moist soil, sheltered from strong west winds. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and work in organic matter. Fully free the root ball and set the plant in place without sinking the root collar. Water generously after planting.

Keep the soil evenly moist (not soggy) for the first two years, especially in hot weather. Mulch the base to hold in moisture. Occasional watering during a dry winter is beneficial. No pruning is needed; the narrow columnar shape holds naturally.
