Planting and care

Plant the eastern redbud in spring or fall in well-drained ground enriched with organic matter. Choose a sunny spot, though it tolerates part shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, set the tree at the same level as in its container, then backfill and firm well.

Water generously after planting during the first growing season, especially during drought. Once established, this tree is fairly drought tolerant. Spread mulch at the base to hold in soil moisture. Pruning is rarely needed, except to remove dead wood or badly placed branches in late winter.
