Planting and care

Plant Catalpa speciosa in fall or spring in a sunny spot, sheltered from strong winds that damage its large leaves. Choose deep, rich, well-drained soil. Dig a roomy hole and amend the planting pit with compost or growing mix.

Water generously at planting and during the first growing season. Once established, the tree tolerates drought well. In early spring, remove dead or crossing branches. Moderate pruning encourages a vigorous structure; however, keep major cuts to a minimum, as wounds heal slowly.
