Planting and care

Plant in full sun in deep, rich, well-drained soil. The dwarf catalpa likes a warm spot sheltered from strong winds. Avoid sites that are too wet or poorly drained, which encourage root diseases.

Water regularly during the first year to build a vigorous root system. After that, the plant tolerates moderate dry spells well. Little care is needed once established: no pruning is required except to tidy the shape if desired. Avoid severe pruning, which delays flowering.
