Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in rich, cool, well-drained soil. Choose a spot in full sun or part shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and amend the soil with compost. Keep at least 6 metres from other trees to encourage its natural architecture.

Water regularly the first year after planting to make sure the roots establish. After that, this tree tolerates moderate drought. No pruning is generally needed; let it develop naturally to keep its characteristic spreading habit. Mulch the soil around the trunk to hold in moisture.
