Planting and care

Plant the columnar hornbeam in fall or spring in well-prepared soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a spot in full sun or light part shade. At planting, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, set the tree in place without sinking it, then backfill with a mix of soil and growing mix.

During the first year, water regularly to keep the soil cool (without excess). After that, this tree is undemanding. A light pruning in late winter keeps its narrow columnar shape. No treatment is required; do avoid waterlogged soil, however.
