Planting and care

Plant in rich, well-drained, slightly limy soil, in full sun or part shade. Leave 30 to 40 cm between plants for good air circulation. Add well-rotted compost at planting and firm the soil moderately.

Water regularly for the first few weeks to build a good root system, then cut back once the plant is well settled. Avoid excess moisture in winter, which encourages rot. Pinch the young shoots lightly in spring for a more compact, bushier bloom. Remove spent flowers to extend the flowering period.
