Planting and care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally enriched with organic matter. Choose a spot sheltered from strong winds to protect the plant's structure. In zone 5b, mulch the base generously and consider winter protection for the first few years.

Water regularly after planting until it is fully established (about two years). Once established, butterfly bush tolerates drought well. Cut back hard in spring before growth resumes to encourage a compact shape and abundant flowering. Remove spent flowers regularly to extend the flowering period.
