Planting and care

Plant the paper birch in fall or spring, in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Choose a spot in full sun. Avoid heavily compacted soils. The tree establishes quickly and handles transplanting well when young.

Water regularly the first year after planting to make sure it takes. Once established, the birch tolerates relative drought well and needs little care. Spread mulch at the base to hold in moisture and moderate swings in soil temperature. No pruning is needed; let the tree develop naturally to keep its graceful shape.
