Planting and care

Plant in rich, well-drained soil, well enriched with organic matter, in part shade or under trees. Japanese anemone likes a spot protected from strong wind. Allow at least 60 cm of spacing for the slow but steady spread of the underground rhizomes.

Water regularly the first year to help it establish, and keep the soil consistently cool during the growing season. Once settled, the anemone copes better with variable conditions. Spread a thick mulch in the fall to protect the rhizomes and gradually enrich the soil. Little care is needed; divide the clumps every 4 to 5 years if desired.
