Planting and care

Plant the serviceberry in fall or spring in rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, set the plant at the same level as in its container and backfill with a mix of soil and organic matter. Mulch the base to hold in moisture and reduce weeds.

Water regularly the first year after planting to encourage rooting. Once established, the serviceberry tolerates dry spells well. No pruning is needed for its natural development; simply remove dead or badly placed branches in late winter. This shrub doesn't need regular fertilizing.
