Planting and care

Plant the serviceberry in fall or spring in a sunny spot, in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. The species tolerates a range of soils and needs no special amendment. Dig a hole 1.5 times the diameter of the root ball and form a slight mound to help drainage.

Water regularly the first year after planting to make sure the roots establish. Once established, the serviceberry resists drought well and needs little care. Organic mulch at the base helps keep the soil moist. No pruning is needed except to remove dead wood or lightly shape the structure in late winter.
