Planting and care

Set in deep, rich, well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, enrich it with organic matter, then plant at the same level as in the nursery. Firm lightly and water thoroughly.

Water regularly the first year, especially in dry spells. Once established, the Ohio buckeye copes well with planting conditions and needs little care. No major pruning is needed; just remove dead or badly placed branches. Avoid planting near paving or sewer lines (spreading roots).
